3 people whose remains were found on Palos Verdes Estates shoreline identified by DNA matches
The identities of three people whose remains were found on the Palos Verdes Estates shoreline since 2023 were recently confirmed by DNA matching, and no foul play was suspected in their deaths, police announced Wednesday, June 18.
They were identified as 62-year-old Zhaoliang Tang, 57-year-old Raymond Simeroth and 68-year-old Michael Paulson.
Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief Luke Hellinga said he hopes identifying the victims can bring some closure for their families and loved ones.
“While the circumstances surrounding each case are heartbreaking,” Hellinga said in a statement, “we hope that these identifications provide a measure of peace to the loved ones who have endured uncertainty and loss.”
In December, officials found two legs in the 1700 block of Paseo Del Mar a day after finding a shipwrecked boat along the same shoreline. Two fishermen were reported missing days before, after they went fishing amid choppy water conditions in San Pedro.
Officials determined the remains belonged to Tang, one of the missing fishermen. No remains of the other fishermen have been found, police said.
In November, beachgoers strolling on the shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates found a skull and other bones later identified as Simeroth’s. Investigators determined that Simeroth was experiencing homelessness before his death.
A Hermosa Beach couple found a femur on the shoreline in January 2023 in the 300 block of Paseo Del Mar that was later determined to be Paulson’s, police said.
He was first reported missing to Redondo Beach police in January 2021 after he reported engine trouble and didn’t return from a boating trip. Officials found Paulson’s boat overturned but didn’t find him at the time.
In all three cases, officials said there was no suspicion of foul play.
