5 Southern California Democrats arrive to tour ICE detention center following raids, protests
A week after she was denied entry to an immigration detention center in the High Desert, Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, has returned to join members of the Southern California congressional delegation on a tour of the facility.
Chu was expected to be joined today by fellow Democratic Reps. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Linda Sánchez, Mark Takano and Luz Rivas “to demand answers regarding unlawful immigration raids, denial of due process, and new allegations that U.S. citizens may have been swept up in enforcement actions.” The lawmakers plan to hold a news conference after the tour.
On June 8, Chu and two other Democratic congressional members, Gil Cisneros and Derek Tran, traveled to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to see the conditions of detainees brought there after raids in Paramount, Compton and other areas in L.A. County that weekend. Padlocks on the gates prevented their entrance.
The tour planned for Tuesday followed Rep. Pete Aguilar’s visit to the facility on Friday.
The sharpened focus on the Adelanto facility comes amid rising tensions and widespread public protest in response to the Trump administration’s immigration efforts in the Los Angeles area that started June 6. Trump has deployed the California National Guard, over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom and now contested in court, and the U.S. Marines to the city to support those efforts.
Democratic lawmakers have been pushing for access to immigration facilities in the U.S., citing their oversight duties as members of Congress, with varying degrees of success.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
