Federal troops will remain for now ahead of possible 7th day of protests
As law enforcement prepared to enter a seventh day of sometimes-violent protests, the National Guard and U.S. Marines will stay put – at least for now.
President Donald Trump won an appeal late Thursday, June 12, to at least temporarily thwart Gov. Gavin Newsom’s courtroom win earlier in the day to take back control of the Guard. A federal judge had ruled Trump’s federalization of troops was “illegal,” providing the governor a short-lived win.
A hearing on the issue was scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.
Immigration-enforcement raids continued Thursday, June 12, prompting one Irvine councilmember to take to Instagram to encourage undocumented residents to stay home. Protesters later gathered and marched around Angel Stadium in Anaheim before someone lit a firecracker around 8 p.m. and an unlawful assembly was declared by police.
Protesters also targeted Southern California hotels in Pasadena, Whittier and Downey late Wednesday and early Thursday after word spread that federal agents were housed there. Pasadena’s City Council on Thursday released a statement in opposition of the raids, which it said were not about public safety, but about stoking fear and panic: “To everyone in our city – especially those who feel afraid or targeted – know this: You belong here. Pasadena remains steadfast in our commitment to the dignity, well-being and safety of all our residents.”
The clash between federal and state authorities reached a head when California Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a Department of Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday while identifying himself as a senator and saying he had a question for Secretary Kristi Noem. Padilla was taken out of the room and handcuffed, but he was not detained or arrested. The confrontation set off a firestorm of blowback from Democratic leaders.
Protests continued in downtown LA and a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. remained in effect for the downtown area. Several other protests took place in areas like San Pedro, Anaheim, Santa Ana and Pasadena.
