Here are some Memorial Day ceremonies around Los Angeles County
In 1971, Congress passed the National Holiday Act, which made Memorial Day a Federal holiday and moved its observance to the last Monday in May.
Here is a sampling of some of the Memorial Day ceremonies planned to honor America’s fallen veterans around Los Angeles County this weekend.

Hermosa Beach’s biggest annual party, Fiesta Hermosa, will honor those who’ve died while serving the country in the U.S. military with a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday afternoon.
The ceremony will take place from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at Fiesta Hermosa’s Acoustic stage, which is located on Vista’s patio at the corner of Pier Plaza and the Strand.
Fiesta Hermosa, free to attend, runs Saturday through Monday.
LA Fleet week will close out its four-day celebration with its annual Memorial Day Observance on Monday evening.
The ceremony, which will include the presentation of colors and a keynote speaker, among other things, will take place at 5:15 p.m. Monday in front of the USS Battleship Iowa, 250 S. Harbor Blvd., within the main Fleet Week expo in San Pedro.
Fleet Week features events all weekend long.
Green Hills, 27501 S. Western Ave., in Rancho Palos Verdes, will host its annual Memorial Day Observance at 10 a.m.
The event will include skydivers, procession of Colors, including a Mounted Posse, reading of letters home to family, flyovers, and the Caber Feidh Pipe Band.

Lakewood residents are invited to join in the city’s annual tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States armed forces, as well as to honor the members of local veterans organizations who have died during the past year.
The Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Plaza at Del Valle Park, located at Woodruff Avenue and Henrilee Street. The keynote speaker this year will be Jim Zenner, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Military & Veterans Affairs. Zenner is an Army veteran of the war in Iraq.
All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach will host its annual Catholic Mass for Memorial Day at 10 a.m. Monday. All Souls Cemetery & Mortuary, 4400 Cherry Ave.
Inglewood will host its annual Memorial Day Service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Mall, 1 W. Manchester Ave. The special event honors the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Redondo Beach, Redondo Beach Elks Lodge No. 1378 and the Veterans Memorial Task Force present a Memorial Day Ceremony by the Veterans Memorial at Veterans Park, 309 Esplanade, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The event will feature commentary music and honors to all Americans who gave their service for the country. Redondo Beach resident Rear Admiral Sandy Adams, United States Navy, retired, will be the Keynote speaker. In addition, the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge will host a BBQ in the Elks parking lot south of their building adjacent to Veterans Park. The Canoga Park Community Center proudly hosts the 33rd Annual Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade. Launches with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.; parade starts at 11 a.m. along Sherman Way from Owensmouth Avenue to Cozycroft Street. This year’s parade honors the sacrifices of Canoga Park High School graduates who served and fell in military conflicts from World War II onward.
The annual tradition will includes speeches and patriotic music. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Los Angeles National Cemetery, 950 S Sepulveda Blvd. Scouts will be placing flags again this year on the graves on Saturday morning, in advance of the event.
The City of Burbank’s Memorial Day Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the McCambridge Park War Memorial, corner of San Fernando Road and Amherst Drive. The event includes a performance from the Burbank Community Band, speakers and a Condor Squadron Flyover.
A Memorial Day celebration hosted by Los Angeles Councilmember Monica Rodriguez’s Office, in partnership with the Port of LA, will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Sunday, May 25, at Brand Park, 15121 S. Brand Blvd., in Mission Hills.
The event will feature a special performance by the 1st Marine Division Band, as well as veteran resources, family-friendly activities, and more.

This long-running community tradition returns Memorial Day weekend with three days of live music, food, drinks, games, arts and crafts.
The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 24, 25 and 26, at the Topanga Community Center, located at 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. Now in its 50th year, the event serves as an annual fundraiser for the center. On Monday, the celebration will include a parade to honor the firefighters who serve and protect Topanga.

La Cañada Flintridge celebrates Memorial Day Weekend with its annual Fiesta Days, a community tradition that will run from 7:30 a.m to 9 p.m. Saturday to Monday.
Saturday features a French toast breakfast, classic car show, farmers market, and a bingo night with an ice cream sundae bar. Sunday brings a summer picnic and ukulele rendezvous at the Lanterman House, followed by a BBQ and live jazz concert under the stars capped with fireworks. On Monday, the YMCA’s Fiesta Days Run kicks off a day of remembrance and revelry, including a memorial service, parade, and a park-wide celebration of games, food and live music. Alhambra and American Legion Post 139 will host a ceremony at the Alhambra Park Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m. Monday, preceded by live music and a continental breakfast at 10 a.m.
L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger will host the 27th Annual Tribute to Veterans and Military Families, held each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. This year’s theme is “bravery and resiliency,” honoring first responders from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who served communities during the Eaton Fire and also served in military. The event will feature a ceremony paying tribute to heroes, a resource fair for veterans and their loved ones, equipment displays, food trucks, live music, and family fun activities. A Resource Fair is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a ceremony at 11 a.m. at 405 S. Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia.
The city of Azusa’s Memorial Day ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the city’s Civic Auditorium, 213 E. Foothill Blvd., All are welcome.

The City of Pasadena and the Pasadena Veterans Day Committee will host the Pasadena Memorial Day Commemoration at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly St.
The ceremony will include the reading of 320 names of the men and women from Pasadena who lost their lives in battle, which will be led by Vice Mayor Jess Rivas and Cadets from the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) Pasadena Division and the Blair High School Army – Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AJROTC).
San Gabriel will host a ceremony from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Plaza Park, 428 S. Mission Drive, held in partnership with the San Gabriel Veterans Memorial Coalition. The ceremony will honor military veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States. The event will feature live music by the Jefferson Middle School Chamber Strings and a performance of Taps by a Gabrielino High School trumpeter.
South El Monte will hold its Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday The ceremony will include poetry readings, speeches and a 21-gun salute. City Hall Front Lawn, 1415 Santa Anita Ave.
The city of Pico Rivera will honor fallen members of the nation’s military at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Mines Avenue Veterans Monument, 9055 Mines Ave., Pico Rivera. Complimentary breakfast will be served from 8 to 9:45 a.m. The names of fallen soldiers from Pico Rivera will be read aloud. Veteran Cindy Rowe, who served in the U.S. Army and whose husband died in the line od duty in Afghanistan, will serve as keynote speaker.
The city of South Pasadena Community Services Deoartment will lead a Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at the War Memorial Building, 435 Fair Oaks Avenue.
The city of West Covina is inviting the community to its Memorial Day Ceremony from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. Monday at the West Covina Civic Center, 1444 W. Garvey Ave. South, West Covina, CA 91790. The event will feature a program of commemorative speeches from community leaders, veterans, and special guests, reflecting on the courage and legacy of fallen heroes. The ceremony will conclude with a community luncheon, offering attendees an opportunity to gather in remembrance and unity.
The city of Whittier will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 13230 Penn St. Current service members and veterans from all branches of the military are invited to join.
Rose Hills Mortuary and Memorial Park will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at its SkyRose Chapel Courtyard, 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier. The program will include the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Band, a flyover and keynote from WWII veteran and centenarian Joseph Sciarra.
