Monrovia’s Old Town Pizza closing after more than 30 years
Old Town Pizza is closing, and a slice of downtown Monrovia life slips away with it.
The Myrtle Avenue staple, on the corner of Lime Avenue, is closing its doors after its owners reported losing their lease. Its last day is Sunday, May 11.
Owner Jake Benitez opened a GoFundMe campaign on Monday, vowing to relocate the business.
“For over 30 years, our restaurant has been a cherished part of this community, and we’ve loved every moment of serving our neighbors and friends,” Benitez wrote. “Unfortunately, I’ve been informed that our lease…will not be renewed and we are being forced to move.”
Benitez is hoping to raise $22,100 to pay for moving and storage costs, finding a new location and covering the loss of revenue during the closure. Most of all, he said he hopes to retain his staff.
“We’ve always been proud to call Monrovia home, and we’re committed to continuing to serve you for many more years to come,” Benitez said.
As of Friday, 14 people have donated $680.
The eatery, which also offers pasta and sandwiches, is right across from the Monrovia Library and is a regular stop for after-game celebrations, birthday lunches and work meals.
