Teen shot, killed at Torrance pool party was reportedly picking up sibling
A teenage boy who was shot and killed during a reported end-of-school-year pool party at a home in Torrance was identified Friday as 17-year-old Chyler Paton of Inglewood, authorities said.
Torrance police were called to the home in the 23000 block of Huber Avenue, just south of Sepulveda Boulevard, just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, on a report of a shooting, Lt. Freddy Ahmad said.
Paton died at the scene.
CBS Los Angeles reported that Paton had arrived to pick up his brother from the party and was standing next to the homeowner in the driveway when a white SUV rounded the corner moments before gunshots rang out. The homeowner and Paton ducked.
The homeowner, who was not identified, told the station someone from the party fired back and when he looked over, Paton was still on the ground.
The homeowner told the station that he rented out his backyard pool through the Swimply app and that 20 people were expected, but more than 100 showed up. Swimply users can rent private pools by the hour.
A surveillance camera from a neighboring home aired by CBS captured people fleeing the house following the shooting.
The football program at Culver City High School, where Paton played as a running back, posted on X Thursday: “Chyler, we are grateful to have been your coaches, teammates and teachers, rest easy young man. It was a privilege to be part of your life. You and your family are in our prayers.”
As a senior, Paton had 123 rushing yards on 30 carries this past season.
Ahmad has confirmed a gathering had taken place at the home, and said the department was investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
