Violent crime was down nationally in 2024, according to half-year FBI snapshot
The FBI reported that violent crime dipped 10% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period the year before.
That’s according to their quarterly crime report issued in September of last year. The agency has yet to release their annual Crime in the Nation statistics report for 2024, which if it follows their schedule from last year should be released in September.
From January through June of 2024, law enforcement agencies that report statistics to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program saw a decrease of 10.3% in violent crime in general compared to the same period in 2023. The agency says that more than 16,000 state, county, city, higher education and tribal agencies, with jurisdiction over 94.3% of the country, report their data.
Murder was down 22.7%, rape was down 17.7%, robbery decreased 13.6% and aggravated assault decreased by 8.1%, according to that quarterly data update. Property crime also decreased by 13.1%.
That shows a downward trend continued from 2023.
Throughout the entirety of the 14 million criminal offenses reported to the FBI that year, national law enforcement dealt with 3% fewer violent crime incidents than throughout 2022. That includes an 11.6% decrease in murder and non-negligent manslaughter, a 9.4% decrease in instances of rape, a 2.8% decrease in aggravated assault and a 0.3% decrease in robberies.
