Moorish Castle in Glendale’s Verdugo Woodlands aims for $2.9M
A Moorish castle in Glendale’s tranquil Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood is on the market for $2.89 million.
Built in 1927 for hardware purchaser John D. Perkins, this distinctive 3,548-square-foot house features three bedrooms and four bathrooms. It showcases an eclectic Spanish Colonial Revival style with Moorish influences.
There’s even a hint of Art Nouveau in the curvilinear shapes of the oversized windows, according to “The Building Biographer” Tim Gregory’s 2001 history of the home.
Records show the current owner is the Emmy-winning “Dancing with the Stars” lighting designer Simon Miles, who bought the property in January 2001 for $850,008.
Listing agent Suzanne Edwards of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, who also sold the property to Miles, said the house is not on any historical registries but could be.
“It’s all original,” she said.
Local architectural designer Donald MacFarlane designed the house that still sits on this woodsy third-acre-plus lot in this neighborhood just 11 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
Inside, the entry hall flows into the main living areas with their hand-stenciled archways.
A fireplace warms the step-down living room, which has a large picture window overlooking the tree canopy.
The dining room flows into the kitchen, which has been updated with high-end appliances. It boasts an oversized island with barstool seating and a butler’s pantry with a stained-glass door.
A curved wrought-iron staircase off the entry hall leads up to the bedrooms, including the primary suite, which connects to a tiled bathroom and a walk-in closet.
French doors open all of the upstairs bedrooms to decks.
The lower level of the house features a media room and a gym.
